MBU Upset Bid Falls Just Short

Demet Saygili dribbles up court for MBU.

Mary Baldwin's upset bid came up just short Tuesday night as Greensboro escaped the PAC with a 65-62 conference victory over the Fighting Squirrels.

Greesnboro has lost just one game this season.

The Fighting Squirrels battled the Pride the entire game. MBU trailed by two, 35-33 at half and the margin was still a two-point Greensboro lead entering the final quarter, 53-51.

The Pride led by six points, 61-55, with 5:43 left in the game, but the Fighting Squirrels scored seven unanswered points to take the lead. A steal and layup by Monica Ramis cut the margin to four and a short jumper by A'Cetta Farrait pulled MBU to within two, 61-59. Ramis then gave MBU the lead, 62-61, with a long 3-pointer with 3:46 left.

MBU failed to score in the final 3:46, but the Squirrels' defensive efforts gave the hone team several chances down the stretch.

After the Ramis 3-pointer, neither team scored for the next two minutes. Greensboro regained the lead at the 1:34 mark on a pair of free throws by Briana Milton.

Following the Milton free throws, MBU had four possessions to regain the lead, but a turnover and three missed shots left the Eagles trailing by a point.

Twice, Greensboro went to the foul line in the final 30 seconds and each time the Pride's shooter was able to convert just 1-of-2 foul shots to keep it a one possession game, 65-62

Mary Baldwin had two opportunities at the offensive end, but was unable to cash in. The Squirrels had one last chance when Greensboro turned the ball over with 2.4 seconds left, but MBU was unable to get off a shot.

Demet Saygili led MBU with 15 points and four assists. Jalen Gatthers scored 13 points while Farrait and Mary Moran each finished with 10.

MBU, now 9-8 overall and 3-6 in league play, returns to action Friday night with a home contest against William Peace.
