
May Baldwin pulled away in the second half Sunday afternoon to defeat Meredith College, 62-40 in conference action.
The Fighting Squirrels led 32-24 at halftime on Senior Day and then outscored the visitors 30-16 in the final two quarters to earn the victory.
Meredith closed the margin to four points, 34-30, early in the third quarter before MBU responded with a 12-2 spurt to lead by 14 points. Hannah Varner started the run with a layup and Mya Coleman added two jumpers to push the margin to double digits, 40-30. Varner added two foul shots before Grace Ledford hit a short jumper for Meredith. Mary Moran capped the 12-2 run with a short jumper to put MBU on top 46-32 with 2:13 left in the third quarter.
MBU utilized a balanced scoring attack in the victory. Jalen Gathers led the winners with 14 points and Coleman came off the bench to add 13. Four more players scored between seven and nine points. A'Cetta Farrait and Demet Saygili narrowly missed double-doubles. Farrait scored nine points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds while Saygili scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds to go along with five steals and four assists. Varner scored eight points and Moran finished with seven.
Mary Baldwin is now 11-8 overall and 7-6 in conference play. The Squirrels are back in action Tuesday night when they host N.C. Wesleyan.
