Women's Basketball Downs Pfeiffer For First Win

STAUNTON, Va. – The Mary Baldwin women's basketball team took on Pfeiffer College in USA South conference action Saturday evening. The Fighting Squirrels took their first win of the season, 61-49, and rose to 1-0 in the USA South Conference. 

Mary Baldwin had four players reach double digits Junior MBU guard Mya' Coleman led all scorers with 17 points and added six rebounds. Sophomore Mekayla Clarke also had a solid performance for the Fighting Squirrels, tallying 16 points, a game-high 18 rebounds, and a steal for the Squirrels.

To start the first quarter of play, the Fighting Squirrels took a commanding 17-9 lead, however, Pfeiffer fought back with some timely threes to trail the Squirrels at the half up 27-22. The second half was a back-and-forth fight before the Squirrels pulled away after some clutch free throws from Coleman sealed the win over the Falcons.

As a team the Fighting Squirrels connected on 34.5% (20-for-58) from the field. Pfeiffer only shot 21.7% (13-for-60 ) from the field. Mary Baldwin outrebounded Pfeiffer 57-36, keeping the momentum for the Squirrels.

The Fighting Squirrels will return to action on Saturday, December 10 at 2:00 p.m. when they travel to Greensboro for their second conference game.
