
MISENHEIMER, N.C. – The Mary Baldwin women's basketball team lost Saturday evening in conference action against Pfeiffer University. The Fighting Squirrels were defeated by the Falcons 72-68
The Squirrels kept it close in the first quarter, trailing by one, 17-16, and went into the half down 37-30. The Squirrels came out of the half strong and pulled even at 40-40 on a jumper by Mya Coleman. MBU took the lead, 43-42, on a 3-pointer by Codie Heilig with 2:21 left in the third quarter before an 8-2 spurt gave the home team a 50-45 lead entering the final quarter.
The Falcons stretched their lead to 13 points with only three minutes remaining before the Squirrels stormed back with a 12-1 run. Mekayla Clarke capped the rally when she scored after grabbing an offensive rebound to pull MBU to within two- 70-68, with 20 secons left. After the Falcons missed two foul shots, MBU had two chances in the closing seconds to tie the score, but the Squirrels went 0-for-4 at the foul line to fall just short.
The Squirrels had four players in double-digits, A'Cetta Farrait and Heilig both posted double-doubles with each player finishing with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Clarke tallied a team-high 17 points and Coleman added 12.
MBU is back in action Wednesday evening at 6:00 pm when they host Greensboro College in conference action.
