SWEET BRIAR, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University women's soccer team returned to NCAA varsity action with a dominating 5-0 win at Sweet Briar on Friday evening.
The Fighting Squirrels register their first varsity victory since Sept. 13, 2015, where they picked up an 8-1 victory against Hollins.
The game remained scoreless into halftime despite MBU outshooting the Vixens 11-2 and posting five corner kicks compared to none for Sweet Briar.
In the second half, Elena Guy opened the scoring with a goal in the 64th minute with an assist from Julissa Gamboa. Less than five minutes later, Guy tallied her second of the match after taking a pass from Makayla Taylor, 2-0. An own goal just 43 seconds later increased the MBU lead to 3-0.
Annie Ammons added the fourth goal of the contest at the 75:45 mark, while Taylor scored her first goal of the season in the 86th minute to bring the score to its final, 5-0.
Overall, Mary Baldwin outshot the home side 29-6 with 18 shots coming in the second half. MBU also claimed an advantage in corner kicks, 7-2, while each team recorded three fouls.
Anyka Wilkin (1-0) registered her first collegiate victory as she stopped five shots, while Sammy Holton and Katelyn Meyer split time in the cage totaling 11 saves in the season-opening contest.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 4, as they open the new SMA Worth Field on the campus of Mary Baldwin against Hollins at 5 pm.
