
MACON, Ga. – The Mary Baldwin University women's soccer team traveled to Wesleyan (Ga.) for a nonconference match up on Friday night, dropping a 3-2 contest at Panoz Field.
The Fighting Squirrels drop to 3-4 on the season, while the Wolves improve to 2-5-1 overall.
In the first half, Wesleyan got on the board first in just the eighth minute as Kelly Matthews scored with multiple assists from Alyssa Key and Madison Whitehead to put the Wolves up 1-0. The home side added to the lead less than 10 minutes later as Thi Soe put the Wolves up 2-0 at the 16:10 mark. The two-goal lead held through for the rest of the half as MBU trailed 2-0 at the recess.
Elena Guy got the Fighting Squirrels on the board with her league-leading sixth goal of the season in the 59th minute, 2-1. Wesleyan responded less than six minutes later with another goal of their own by Key, which proved to be the game-winning goal. Jackie Marin notched her first goal of the year at the 73:05 mark to cut the lead to just one goal, but the Wolves held on for the 3-2 victory
Anyka Wilkin stopped two shots on five shots on target in the loss, while Carlee Dykes pushed aside 10 shots on Friday night.
MBU outshot WC, 17-10, while also holding a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. The match ended with just five fouls called between both sides.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action tomorrow, September 21, as they visit LaGrange in a nonconference matchup beginning at 12 pm.
