STAUNTON, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University women's soccer team took on Meredith at home on Saturday afternoon. The Avenging Angels defeated the Fighting Squirrels by a score of 5-1 and improving to 4-11 and 3-3 in the conference, while MBU fell to 4-11 and 0-6 in conference.
Meredith opened the scoring in the seventh minute with a goal by Kaelin Sanderford. Lillian Fox went on to score the second goal of the match for the Avenging Angels with an assist from Katie Quinn. On a pass from Kaelin Sanderford in the 37th minute, McKenzie Jackson took the ball from the keeper for the third goal of the contest. In the 52nd minute Katie Quinn scored on a header off of a corner kick from Mia Slaunwhite. Hannah Elvington scored the fifth goal for the Avenging Angels off of a through ball from Morgan Tingen.
Mary Baldwin outshot Meredith 17-14 and also held the edge in corner kick 6-5.
Emily Hayes got the win in net for Meredith improving to 3-2 and making eight saves, while Anyka Wilkin fell to 4-11 and saving five shots.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action next Wednesday, Oct. 23 in a home match against Averett.
