
STAUNTON, Va. - The Mary Baldwin women's soccer team is now 5-2-1 on the season, after a 7-2 non-conference loss to Roanoke (4-3) Tuesday Afternoon.
Sophomore Forward Sara Gruntowicz got the Squirrels off to a fast start when she intercepted a pass from the Roanoke goalie and deposited her shot into the back of the net for a 1-0 MBU lead in the first 37 seconds of the game.
Roanoke tied the score on a penalty kick three minutes later when MBU's keeper was given a red card, forcing the Squirrels to play a player down the rest of the game. Roanoke turned on the heat to score two more times to lead 3-1 going into the half.
The Maroons' offense was too much to handle for the Squirrels in the second half as four more goals made the score 7-1 MBU sophomore midfielder Isabelle Fraher scored a long goal off a pass from Quierra Hawkins to end the game at 7-2.
Mary Baldwin, now 5-2-1 is back in action Saturday afternoon (Sep. 24) at 3:00 p.m. at home against Pfeiffer for their first conference game of the season.
