
STAUNTON, Va. - The Mary Baldwin women's soccer team improved to 7-2-1 on the season with a 2-0 non-conference victory Wednesday afternoon over Averett University.
It was a back-and-forth fight until the second half when the Squirrels outshot Averett 14-4.
With seven minutes left in the second half, senior Sam Manfre scored a goal in back-to-back games, finding the back of the net off of a pass from sophomore Teya Baptista.
Just four minutes later junior Kate Thoele scored her first goal of the season on a long shot from outside the box off a pass from Quierra Hawkins to put the Squirrels up 2-0..
The Squirrels outpaced Averett in shots 20-9 and tied on corners 4-4. Sophomore keeper Maddy Vinson achieved a season-high five saves to help the Squirrels defensively.
Mary Baldwin returns to conference action Saturday (Oct 1) at SMA Worth Field at noon where they will host William Peace (5-1)
