STAUNTON, Va. - Salem College scored in the 88th minute Wednesday afternoon to surprise Mary Baldwin 1-0 in USA South conference action.

Mary Baldwin held a 21-11 advantage in total shots, but Salem managed a 6-5 edge in shots on frame and a slim 4-3 margin in corner kicks.

Salem's Darilyn Nieto, who had four of the Spirits' six shots on goal, scored the match's lone goal in the 88th minute when she tucked a shot inside the near post for the score.

Mary Baldwin just missed a chance to get on the board in the 72nd minute when Isabelle Fraher's shot from the left side hit the far post and caromed back into the box. Kate Thoele tried to clean up the rebound but her shot attempt was blocked by a Salem defender.

Mary Baldwin, now 7-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference, travels to Methodist on Saturday.
