
STAUNTON, Va. - Mary Baldwin scored four goals in the second half Tuesday afternoon to pull away from Greensboro College 5-1 in USA South women's soccer action.
After Greensboro scored first with a goal in the 16th minute. the Fighting Squirrels tied the score off a Shea Rider corner kick. Rider sent the corner to the far post and the ball glanced off Teya Baptista and rolled past the keeper, tying the score at 1--1 in the 26th minute.
MBU moved ahead on another corner kick early in the second half. Kate Thoele sent the corner into the box and Sara Gruntowicz headed the ball past the keeper for a 2-1 Squirrels lead.
The Squirrels scored again less than two minutes later when Rider possessed the ball on the left wing, worked around her defender and scored from 20 yards out, making the score 3-1.
MBU's final two goals also came from deep. Thoele scored from 25 yards out to make it 4-1 and Morgan Martin scored from long range to compete the 5-1 victory.
Mary Baldwin finished with an 18-12 edge in total shots.
MBU keeper Anyka Wilkin recorded six saves to pick up the win in goal.
The Squirrels return to action Thursday afternoon when they host William Peace. Game time has been moved to 3:45 p.m.
