Mary Baldwin Surges Past Pacers

STAUNTON, VA, - The Mary Baldwin University women's soccer team won 2-1 against William Peace on Thursday afternoon in conference action.

The Fighting Squirrels get their ninth win to move to 9-4-1 and 3-2 in the conference while William Peace moves to 7-4 on the season with a 1-3 conference record.

Mary Baldwin got the ball rolling with the first goal in the 29th minute on a high-arcing shot from freshman Vanessa Alfaro-Young for her 4th goal of the season. Sophomore Morgan Martin provided the assist.

The Pacers answered with their own goal from Raine Greene to send the Squirrels into the half tied.

Mary Baldwin then came out of the half with a quick goal from junior Quierra Hawkins after dribbling past the keeper to find the back of the net for her first goal of the season Sophomore Sara Gruntowicz was credited with the assist..

Senior keeper Anyka Wilkin helped defensively with seven saves to keep the lead for the Squirrels.

William Peace sheld slim margins over the Squirrels in total shots, 18-17, and corners with a 5-1 advantage.

The Fighting Squirrels return to action on Saturday, October 15, at 3 p.m. when they travel to play Meredith (1-5-2) in Raleigh, N. C.
