
RALEIGH, N.C., - The Mary Baldwin University women's soccer team won 5-0 against Meredith on Saturday afternoon in conference action.
The Fighting Squirrels get their 10th win to move to 10-4-1 and 4-2 in the conference. The Squirrels are in second place in the conference standings. Meredith moves to 1-6-2 on the season with a 0-3-2 conference record.
Mary Baldwin got the ball rolling right away with their first goal 28 seconds into the game on an unassisted shot from junior Kate Thoele, her third goal of the season. The Squirrels kept the ball rolling with a goal in the second minute by junior Quierra Hawkins for her second goal of the season. Thoele had the assistm giving the Squirrels a 2-0 lead at the halfway mark.
Mary Baldwin kept the pace in the second half by scoring another goal in the 46th minute by freshman Vanessa Alfaro-Young, her fifth goal of the year off a pass from Hawkins. In the 57th minute sophomore Sara Gruntowicz scored her fourth goal of the season with the assist from Alfaro-Young.
The Squirrels finished the game after a goal from sophomore Brenna Kehoe, her eighth of the year, off a pass from Gruntowicz to conclude the game 5-0.
Sophomore keeper Maddy Vinson helped defensively with a season-high seven saves to keep the shutout for the Squirrels.
Mary Baldwin held margins over the Angels in total shots, 25-13, and corners with a 5-4 advantage.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action on Wednesday, October 19, at 7 p.m. when they travel to play Marymount (Va.) (4-7-4) in Arlington, va., in non-conference action.
