WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Mary Baldwin women's tennis team picked up its second conference win of the season with a 7-2 victory Tuesday over Salem College.
The Fighting Squirrels took an early lead, winning two of the three doubles matches. At No. 1 doubles MBU's Katlyn Massie and Gretchen Lutz outlasted Cadence Durhman and Emily Griffis 8-6. Hannah Eastridge and Virani Bhagat picked up MBU's second point with a convincing 8-1 win at the No. 2 doubles slot over Allyson Gammons amd Ashley Linden.
Mary Baldwin put the match away by winning five of the six singles matches.
Massie rallied after a first set loss to defeat Durham 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 1 singles. Lutz surivived a close first set with Griffis to win 7-5, 6-0 at the No. 2 position. Eastridge took two close sets to defeat Alana Bridges 6-4, 7-5 at No. 3. At No. 4 Bhagat outlasted Gammons 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) to take the point for the Squirrels. Kelsey Bantel played a solid match at No. 5, deteating Linden 6-3, 7-5 for the Squirrels' final point.
