STAUNTON, Va. - The Mary Baldwin women's tennis team slipped past Meredith 5-4 Saturday in conference action. The Fighting Squirrels improve to 5-14 overall, 4-4 in USA South Conference play. That's the most conference victories in a season for MBU since the 1999-20 campaign.
Mary Baldwin took one point in doubles play as Katlyn Massie and Gretchen Lutz won their match at the No. 1 slot. Massie and Lutz fell behind early, 3-0, but rallied with six straight games to post a 6-3 victory. Meredith countered with wins at second and third doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles.
The Squirrels claimed the first four flights in singles play to win the match. Massie won at No. 1, followed by winners Lutz, Hannah Eastridge and Virani Bhagat to solidify their position in sixth place in the USA South standings. The top eight teams advance to the conference playoffs, which begin Tuesday, April 25. It'll be MBU's first conference playoff appearance since 2012.
