WINCHESTER, Va. – The Mary Baldwin University women's volleyball team battled Shenandoah in nonconference action at the James R. Wilkins Athletics & Events Center on Tuesday night.
The Fighting Squirrels won the first set by a 25-13 count before the Hornets struck back with a 25-20 win in second two. MBU took the third set 25-19, but fell 25-20 in the fourth and 15-7 in the fifth to fall to the host, 3-2.
Rachel Christian led the Fighting Squirrels with 15 kills and also compiled 23 digs for a kill/dig double-double. She also registered a service ace.
Michaela Beverly dropped in 13 kills and added a block, while Deborah Black finished with nine kills and 10 digs and Madison Varner tallied seven kills. Emma Tomlinson tallied a game-high 35 assists and also contributed a kill, two service aces, seven digs and a pair of blocks.
Madison Cash paced MBU with 26 digs and recorded a pair of assists and service aces.
For the Hornets, Emily Cheatwood and Kate Poppo each finished with 12 kills, while Sabrina Semo recorded eight. Megan Hillyard led the way with 24 assists and Brooke Wagner added 18. Gabby Coradazzi led the team with 23 digs and Poppo was behind her with 20.
The Fighting Squirrels return to action on Thursday in the PAC against Averett beginning at 7 pm.
