
STAUNTON, Va – The Mary Baldwin women's volleyball team hosted a USA South tri-match Saturday, taking on Methodist University and Salem College.
The Fighting Squirrels suffered a tough loss against Methodist in five sets (25-21, 21-25, 25-19, 20-25, 15-13). MBU led two sets to one before eventually fallng in set five. Methodist closed the final set with a 6-0 run to win 15-13.
Against Methodist, senior Rachel Christian paced the team offensively with a season-high 21 kills, while sophomore Soleil Rios Rolon tallied 19 digs and pitched in with three service aces.
In the second match of the day, the Squirrels lost to Salem in four sets (21-25, 22-25, 28-26, 16-25), MBU rallied in a 28-26 win in the third set and was again led by Christian with 17 kills on a .233 hitting perecentage. She also added seven digs. Freshman Emily Penny registered a career-high 25 assists to lead the team while freshman Leah Sherrill dropped in three service aces, Sydney Clarke also recorded a pair of aces.
The Fighting Squirrels are back in action as they head on the road for the first time in conference play where they will seek their first conference win when they play Meredith on Thursday, Sept. 29, in Raleigh, N.C.
