Volleyball Picks Up First Conference Victory

BUENA VISTA, Va. - The Mary Baldwin volleyball team picked up its first USA South conference victory of the season Saturday afternoon as the Fighting Squirrels blanked Brevard 3-0 at the Southern Virginia quad match.

Trailing 7-6 in the first set, MBU reeled off seven straight points to lead 13-7. MBU led 20-13 before Brevard fought back and eventually pulled even at 23-23. A block error against Brevard and a kill by Rachel Christian closed out the first set for MBU 25-23.

The second set was tied late at 21-21 before a Brevard service error and a kill by Christian gave MBU a 23-21 lead. After a Brevard kill, another kill by Christian coupled with a Brevard attack error gave MBU the 25-22 win, putting the Squirrels ahead two sets to none.

Mary Baldwin trailed 7-5 early in the third set before an 8-0 run put the Squirrels on top 13-7. MBU continued to uull away, clsoing out the match with a 25-13 win in the third set.

Christian led the Squirrels with 21 kills and a .381 hitting percentage. Emily Penny paced the team with 20 assists and Soleil Rios Rolon chipped in with 19 digs.

The Squirrels came up short in their first match on Saturday, losing to Pfeiffer in four sets - 25-18, 25-22, 27-29, 25-19.

Christian and Sydney Clarke each posted a double-double for the Squirrels. Christian paced the team with 18 kills while also adding 10 digs. Clarke finished with 10 kills and 11 digs. Freshmen Leah Sherrill and Penny shared the setting duties with Sherrill recording 22 assists and Penny adding 20. Rolon led the team in digs with 21.

The Squirrels will return to the court Friday evening when they host N. C. Wesleyan in conference action.
