Mary Baldwin Cross Country Teams Compete in League Championship Meet

ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. – The Mary Baldwin University men's and women's cross country teams competed in the USA South Championship meet on Saturday, which was hosted by N.C. Wesleyan.

The women's team claimed an eighth place team finish, while the men finished 13th.

For the women, three runners scored in the top 50 as they finished in eighth out of 18 total teams with 243 points. Berea took the team championship with 41 points behind five runners inside the top 15, including Jamie Welch who claimed medalist honors. Covenant took second in the team standing while Piedmont, Maryville and Meredith rounded out the top five.

Brianna Parker was the top finisher for the Fighting Squirrels as she finished in 28th place with a time of 26:24.69. The time was over a full minute improvement from the last time MBU ran the course this past October. The finish garnered her an All-USA South Honorable Mention as the Fighting Squirrels place someone in the top 30 for the second season in a row and third time in the last five seasons.

Placing behind Parker was Morgan Laferte who finished 50th with a time of 28:06.25, while Quinland Musgrove completed the course in 28:22.84. Stephanie Barbaro ran a 28:35.89 and Katelyn Pollock rounded out the scoring runners with a time of 30:28.17. Sonje Green also ran and finished with a time of 33:36.70.

On the men's side, MBU finished in 13th in the team standings in its first year as a varsity team. Berea completed its sweep of the team championships with a perfect score of 15 as Logan McKenzie took home medalist honors with a time of 25:27.35. Covenant claimed second in the team standings, while Piedmont, Methodist and host N.C. Wesleyan rounded out the top five teams.

Caleb Simmons was the top finisher of the Fighting Squirrels as he crossed the finish line in 32:20.86. Behind him was Joseph Widger who ran the 8K course in 36:39.39 followed by Paul Dearing at 37:24.33. Douglas Drummond and Gregory Woodard rounded out the scoring runners with times of 38:55.28 and 39:02.13. Mohammad Alamdar also ran for the Fighting Squirrels and finished the race with a season-best 8K time.

In addition to competing today, the year-end awards were also announced. Stephanie Barbaro took a spot on the league's all-sportsmanship team while Joseph Widger earned the spot for the men's team.
