MBU Loses OT Heartbreaker, 119-115, At Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va. - For the second time in three games, Mary Baldwin came up just short in overtime, losing Wednesday night at Randolph College, 119-115.

Both teams held double-digit leads in the game. Mary Baldwin led 35-24 in the first half when Zach Fullagar hit a 3-pointer at the 5:41 mark. The WildCats fought back and trailed by just a point, 46-45, at halftime.

With just less than 14 minutes left in the game, Randolph took its first double-figure lead at 66-56. With 6:39 ramaining, Randolph led 89-78.

MBU rallied and took the lead, 97-96, on a layup by Fullagar. With 22 seconds left in the game, Jaden Ignacio scored inside to put the Fighting Squirrels up 101-100. Randolph's Jordan Phillips-McCloy was fouled with three seconds left and made the first foul shot to tie the score at 101-101. Phillips-McCloy missed the second foul shot and the Squirrels controlled the rebound. A shot from just past haflcourt bounced off the rim, sending the game to overtime.

The Squirrels scored first in OT on a 3-pointer by Fullagar. After five straight points by the WildCats, Fullagar hit another 3-pointer to put MBU ahead 107-106.

Three free throws by Randolph's Evan Makle put the Cats ahead 109-107 with 2:48 left and the home team held the lead until a bucket by Ignacio gave the Squirrels a 115-114 lead with 52 seconds remaining. Randolph's Phillips-McCloy answered with a 3-pointer to put the Cats back on top 117-115 with 36 seconds to go. MBU had two shots to regain the lead in the final 10 seconds but two 3-point tries were off the mark. The rebound on the second miss went out of bounds to the WildCats and Jerry Goodman made two foul shots with a second left on the clock to ice the victory for Randolph, 119-115.

All five Mary Baldwin starters scored in double figures, led by Fullagar's double-double of 35 points and 12 rebounds. Fullagar made 13-of-21 shots from the floor. Ignacio just missed a double-double, finishing with 24 points, nine rebounds and six assists. Quentin Hart scored 19 points, followed by Vernon Fraley with 16 and Tyler Thomas with 15.

Randolph's CJ Loving nearly matched Fullager's output as he finished with 35 points and 10 boards. WildCats' guard Danny Bickey scored 27 points.

Both teams were red-hot from the floor. MBU made 47-of-92 shots for 51.1 percent while the WildCats hit 44-of-82 shots for 53.7 percent.

Mary Baldwin returns to action Saturday afternoon when the Squirrels host Ferrum College.
