HARRISONBURG, Va. - For the third time this season, the Mary Baldwin men's basketball team lost a game in overtime, falling Tuesday night at Eastern Mennonite, 89-87.
Eastern Mennonite opened the second half with a 14-4 run, extending its two-point halftime lead to 52-40. Mary Baldwin then responded with a 15-3 spurt to pull even with the Royals. MBU's Vernon Fraley knocked down a jumper to tie the score with 11:17 left in the game.
A 3-pointer by Hayden Brun gave the Squirrels their first lead of the second half, 62-60, with 9:32 left. A three-point play by guard Jaden Ignacio put MBU up 67-64 and the Squirrels held the lead until EMU's Daijordon Brown converted a three-point play to give the Royals a two-point, 77-75, lead with 57 seconds remaining.
Mary Baldwin's Quentin Hart then scored on a layup to tie the game at 77-77 with 38 seconds left. EMU missed two shots in the final 10 seconds to send the game to overtime.
EMU scored the first five points in the extra sesson to lead 82-77 and the Royals led the rest of the way. Two foul shots by MBU's Zach Fullagar made it a one-point game, 86-85, with seven seconds left, but the Royals held on for the victory.
MBU, now 0-5, returns to action Saturday with a visit to Williamsburg, Va., for an exhibition contest with Division I foe William & Mary.
