
BREVARD, N.C. - Mary Baldwin's Christopher Kirksey won the long jump Thursday on the first day of the USA South Athletic Conference Track & Field Championship Meet.
Kirksey won the event with a best effort of 6.70 meters.
David Shultz also scored for the Squirrels with a sixth-place throw of 37.96 meters in the javelin.
In Thursday's track prelims, Shyheim Holmes and Kirksey each qualified for the final in two events. Inn the 200 prelims, Holmes turned in the fastest time at 22.71 with Kirksey third at 22.90. In the 400 meters, Holmes was second fastest at 50.97 with Kirksey fourth at 51.11.
The MBU women scored in two events Thursday. Grace Hearns took fifth place in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.25 seconds and Isabel Basilis placed sixth in the javelin with a throw of 23.09 meters.
On the track, Quierra Hawkins qualified for the 100 meters final with a time of 13.40 seconds, the sixth-fastest clocking. Hawkins just missed qualifying for the 200 meters final, placing ninth in the prelims at 27.90.
